Advice if you are experiencing domestic abuse and need help while you are out and about

About

Over recent years, a range of ‘safe places’ have been established if you are experiencing domestic abuse and need help while you are out and about. These have a range of purposes, from providing direct support to you or helping you have free and easy access to local or national helplines.

In Somerset, you will find these safe places in many supermarkets including Morrisons, Tesco and Asda, plus banks such as Natwest, Lloyds, HSBC and TSB.

There are also many independent pharmacies and chains such as Boots and Superdrug. You will see posters advising what to do, or can ask staff at the counter to use the consultation room or their ‘Safe Space’, where you then will be able to contact services for help and advice.

In an emergency, you should always dial 999. If you are worried that an abuser may overhear your call you can remain silent, tap the phone and dial 55 when prompted by the operator who will send help.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired you can register with emergencySMS.net. You will then be able to send a text to 999 if you require help in an emergency.
